The Government of Quebec awards a
significant grant to the ECO
2 Project
Picture
Quebec City, November 21, 2022 – The Fonds de diversification économique pour le territoire de la MRC des Appalaches fund has awarded SIGMA DEVTECH a significant grant for the ECO2 Magnesia project. To carry out the environmental studies required for the production of magnesium oxide with a low carbon footprint, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) was granted to the company.

This support from the Government of Quebec  will enable ECO2 Magnesia to complete a strategic step, namely the environmental feasibility analysis for its plant that will produce 20,000 tonnes per year of magnesium oxide on the site of the former Carey mine in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.

Quebec solutions for carbon capture
Mathieu Perreault

CO2 capture and sequestration will be critical technologies if the world fails to sufficiently reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Experts warn that the future of the planet cannot be bet on these still evolving technologies. But Quebec firms and researchers are working in the field.

The project planned at former Mine Carey mine site in Sacré-Cœur de Jésus and Tring-Jonction is progressing well.
ECO2 Magnesia, specialized in the production of green magnesium oxide, is looking to transform, revalorize and commercialize the decontaminated mine tailings, which will be pretreated by 3R Mineral Inc., located Thetford, into a magnesium oxide of very high purity.

The world's first green magnesium oxide
By Eric Gourde

A new green life for mine tailings
Hélène Baril

Picture
The residual mine tailings from Quebec's asbestos mines are increasingly coveted for the other minerals they contain. A Quebec company, ECO2 Magnesia, will produce magnesium oxide on the former Carey mine site in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.

The project, which will require an investment of 150 million dollars, has just reached an important milestone with the confirmation of its low carbon footprint. "A very big step," says Paul Boudreault, president of Sigma Devtech, the firm that is leading the project.

The ECO2 Magnesia technology, developed by the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), has been validated by an independent study by COOP Carbone, which establishes that it emits up to 30 times less greenhouse gases than conventional processes used to produce magnesium oxide.
