Decontamination of Mine Tailings

Since the end of the mining era in the 1980s, the landscape of the Chaudière-Appalaches region has been characterized by mountains of abandoned mine tailings. Today, these remnants of the past are a source of inspiration for the ECO2 Magnesia team.

The ECO2 project is innovative: we will give a second life to magnesium-rich mine tailings by transforming them into a high-value product: ultra-pure magnesium oxide. In doing so, we will enhance the environment and use a 100% ecological process with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the worlds.

The ECO2 solution is real and concrete. It will decontaminate up to 480,000 tons of mine tailings per year. As a comparative, it is the equivalent of 50 Eiffel Towers filled with tailings per year, for a period of at least 60 years.

The decontamination of mine tailings, which is carried out through a thorough thermal pre-treatment process makes it possible to decontaminate and secure the raw material (the mine tailings).
